This article describes two methods for rotating a Chromebook’s screen: one that you can do as you go and one that you can do in the Settings app. If you use a second device, it also contains instructions on how to rotate the screen on it.

Quick Way to Rotate a Chromebook Screen With the Keyboard

The quickest and easiest way to rotate your screen is to press and hold CTRL+Shift and the Refresh key on your keyboard. The Refresh key looks like a circle with an arrow on it, located just above the numbers 3 and 4 on your keyboard. When you do, your screen will turn 90 degrees in the direction of the clock. Upon pressing those keys for the first time, a popup will appear asking you if you want to rotate your screen. Click Continue.

1. Click the clock and select Settings.
2. Click Device > Displays.
3. Under Orientation, click the drop-down box. You are now ready to move in the direction you have chosen.

If your Chromebook is a 2-in-1, and you have the screen all the way around in the tablet position, the Orientation drop-down box will be dimmed.

Reverse the screen’s orientation into laptop mode to choose an orientation. Chromebooks in tablet mode override the orientation in Display settings.

How to Flip the Second Display on a Chromebook

These two techniques also function with secondary displays. The keyboard command still functions even if you’ve connected a second display. You would need to move your cursor to the display you want to rotate since the location of the cursor determines the rotation orientation.

In settings, each display will have its own tab inside Settings > Devices > Displays. To change the orientation of a single screen, click on either tab.

It’s not necessary for both screens’ orientations to match.

Other Chromebook Rotate Screen Notes

When you change the orientation of your screen, even after a restart, that setting is retained. If your Chromebook is a 2-in-1, the only way to change the orientation setting is to flip it over and use it as a tablet.

It’s also crucial to keep in mind that the track pad’s orientation and directions can change. For instance, if you turn the screen 90 degrees, the cursor will move from left to right when you move your finger up on the track pad and toward the top of the screen. You should be ready for the fact that this may be confusing. Correcting this is made simpler by having a Chromebook with a touchscreen.
